Jason Collette at Baseball Propectus looked at Victor Martinez drop in home run power this season. I decided to see if the decrease could have been caused by a loss in batted ball distances. The following graph shows the average distances of all V-Mart’s fly balls and home runs over the past 3 years:
He was fairly consistent over the two previous seasons, but his distance has dropped off this year. Here is a break down of the average distance for each of the 3 years:
2009 – 289 ft
2010 – 291 ft
2011 – 276 ft
His drop in power is to the tune of almost 15 ft less per fly ball. The drop would explain his HR/FB drop from 10.7% to 5.0%.
